I attended a forum on the coming bond issue last night at Southwest Junior High. Unfortunately only 3 people, including myself, attended.

20 teachers and 3 principals are retiring at the end of this year. An additional 17 could take retirement if they chose. One of the reasons? "Teacher morale in the district is at an all-time low" according to Arthur Sloan who is retiring after 33 years at Lawrence High.

The school board has offered a $1 million salary increase to district teachers. Raises are expected to be between 1.5 and 3 percent, however some questions surround the offer.

Instead the district will spend $40,000 to put two portables at Hillscrest Elementary. Hillcrest has the districts only English as a Second Language Program (ESL) which was a primary cause for concern amont parents.
